Town Council & County Council News

Welcome –Welcome to Keith Mizon who has been recruited as Deputy Clerk, on a part time contract. Keith will have just started by the time the Grapevine is delivered. I'm sure many of you will come into contact with him over the coming months.

Speeding Stickers – South Norfolk have notified the Town Council that they have produced high visibility stickers which can be put on bins to discourage speeding at a cost of 25p each. If you would like to purchase a sticker, please let the office know. If we get a high enough response then we can purchase them on your behalf.

Street Parties (Queen's Jubilee) – South Norfolk Council has a funding pot available to groups wishing to organise street parties for the Queen's Jubilee. The closing date for applications is Wednesday 29th February. For more information contact Cultural Services Team on 01508 533816.

Town Council Meetings – Just to remind you that Town Council meetings take place on the second Wednesday of the month and all members of the public are welcome to attend. Agendas are on the council noticeboard (outside Tudor Bakehouse) at least three days in advance of the meeting.

Next Phase of Development at Mendham Lane (Persimmon Homes) - Bidwell's, who are representing Persimmon Homes, will be attending the next Town Council meeting on the 8th February to give the councillors the opportunity to discuss a proposed layout for the next phase of building.

Thank you – I'm sure many of you will have long forgotten about Christmas, however, I thought that it was important to thank the following for volunteering on Sunday 8th January to take down all of the lights and the tree: Harleston Lions, Harleston Fire Service, Councillor Brian Riches, Basil Eastaugh, David Green (Gawdy Hall), Shaun Button (Danarbour) and Steve, Kyle and Lin (Town Council).

From our County Councillor

As we all know, the Olympic and Paralympic games are coming to our country in July and the County Council is working with Active Norfolk and the NHS to promote support for these games in Pledge 2012.  Pledge 2012 would like you to become more active and healthy in the run up to the London 2012 games.  Whether you want to take part in more activities as a family, participate in a charity run, join the local gym or become a coach for young people in the county, there are no limits to your personal pledge.  So, if you want to be part of the bigger picture, visit www.pledge2012.com.  Everyone who makes a pledge will be part of a flag of photographs which will be unfurled to celebrate the opening of the games.

Norfolk County Council's library service invites you to join in their second annual campaign - those people who borrow the most items will be in with a chance of winning one of 120 limited edition gold library membership cards.  The gold cards will be awarded to the one adult and one child at each of the County Council's 47 libraries and 13 mobile libraries who have made the most of their library membership and borrowed more items than anyone else in the first six months of the year.  Last year, more than 9,000 people joined the library service in Norfolk.

In the current financial year (to the end of March 2012) NCC has had £34.3m to spend on major structural maintenance and improvements to their highways which included £7m in special winter damage funding because of the severity of the weather last winter.  For the year ahead (2012/13) Norfolk has been allocated £26.7m in grant, but this will be boosted by an allocation from extra funds being made available by the Government to freeze Council Tax.

NCC has teamed up with the Eastern Daily Press to launch the 'Say Yes to Better Broadband' campaign aiming to generate a 'critical mass' interest from every section of society.  £30m in public funding has been secured to bring superfast broadband to all of Norfolk's residents and a similar amount of private investment is still needed if the project is to reach its full potential.  You can register your interest either through the EDP or online at the County Council's website.

My next surgery in Harleston is on Saturday 11th February at HIP.
